Local
History Sources
All history is local! Louis XIV of France is a local historical figure to those who live in Versailles. By "local history" in this section, there is no attempt to limit the meaning of local history to East Texas, Texas, the Southwest, or even United States history, although specific pages reference the sites in each of these areas. The following are general sources which are relevant to the ways people are doing local history throughout the country and the world. Some of the best local histories in the world are done in England and France. Local history is a reflection of national history and world history; it also embraces many disciplines such as geography, geology, anthropology, ecology, sociology, the arts and architecture, and many other areas.
This online manual is a reference work in progress. The new material appearing daily on the Internet and in particular on the Web is voluminous. One good way to begin to study history, in many ways, is to start with yourself (family history) and with the town in which you live (local history). Start with questions like these: Where do you fit in? What makes you similar to your friends? What makes you different? What makes your town unique? What were the most critical influences on your life, on the life of your family, and the life of your town, national, and world? Etc... The route is circular and will take you back to yourself.
The Center for East Texas Studies is supplying this site to help you gather information. The questions you ask about yourself and your family and your local history using the Internet will help CETS accomplish its mission of promoting all aspects of the heritage of East Texas.
