Where
to Start Family History Research?
The Genealogy Home Page and Cyndi's List
- One of the best resources for finding any information is the
search engine Google.com.
Their resource pages for genealogy are wonderful. The address is
found by going to Society>Genealogy>Resources. Click
here.
Google list sites for beginners, provides the most popular sites
in page-rank order or in alphabetical order, and also provides
links to tutorials. RootsWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com
- and Ancestry.com
are their top rank favorites. RootsWeb's Index
to Sources is a good starting point.
- There are several other good places to start with family
history research. The The
Genealogy Home Page has guides, help, libraries, maps,
deeds and photography, resource sites, genealogy software,
societies, events, and commercial services. The Genealogy Home
Page will, in turn, refer you to such sites as the Latter Day
Saints research guides; these are also referenced on these
pages.
- Cyndi's List
has over 28,950 links, categorized & cross-referenced, in over
90 categories. For Texas, see http://www.CyndisList.com/tx.htm

ability to search by geographic location, by directories of E-Mail
Address, FTP Sites, Gopher Sites, etc. as well as use the
extensive subject headings. The Library of Congress Subject
Guides are also extremely useful as starting points to
understand the search terms to use in bibliographic quests. The LC
