The African American Heritage Project Statement of Purpose The African American Heritage Project (AAHP) is a joint venture between the Department of History, The Center for East Texas Studies (CETS) at Stephen F. Austin State University, and the Black Heritage Association of Nacogdoches. With its main purpose evolving around research about and bringing into the public domain knowledge of the life and culture of the African American community of Nacogdoches, the goal of this initiative is to capture and to document the dynamics of local African American history and to place it into context of Nacogdoches' past and present. In order to achieve this goal, the project intends to engage in large-scale and systematic collection, recording, preservation and dissemination of knowledge about African Americans inthe Nacogdoches Community. This would involve the collection of exant written materials as well as that of oral histories from black and white community members regarding the various aspects of African American life and culture. The AAHP is comprised of
individuals from diverse racial and ethnic
backgrounds in the Nacogdoches community at large
and individuals from the History Department and the
